Course Description:
The Emergency Medical Technician course prepares the EMT student to provide prehospital assessment and care for patients of all ages with a variety of medical conditions and traumatic injuries. Areas of study include an introduction to emergency medical services systems, roles and responsibilities of EMTs, anatomy and physiology, medical emergencies, trauma, special considerations for working in the prehospital setting, and providing patient transportation.
Course Objectives:
Introduce concepts of emergency care and review the well-being of the EMT
Discuss medical, legal, and ethical aspects of emergency medical services
Describe effective communication skills and documentation techniques
Review medical terminology, basic anatomy, physiology, and life span development
Provide competent assessment skills, including vital signs, for medical, trauma, pediatric, and special populations.
Introduce critical thinking skills
Provide effective CPR skills and airway management
Demonstrate proper lifting and moving techniques
Review general pharmacology
Identify and provide basic care for emergencies such as:
Respiratory
Cardiac
Abdominal
Diabetic
Allergic Reactions/Poisonings
Behavioral
OB/GYN
Geriatrics
Pediatrics
Trauma
Environmental
Provide awareness of hazardous materials, terrorism, and highway and street safety
Demonstration of effective extrication techniques
Provide general guidelines for incident management of a Mass Casualty Incident
Methods & Requirements:
Participation in lecture, skills labs, and clinical time.
Each student will be required to provide ten documented patient assessments prior to the completion of the program.
Evaluation: Written tests and skill competency evaluation (practical)
